1- What is an online class?

It is a class that takes place via the internet on your computer. You will be speaking to a professor and other students during the class in real time. The professor will be using interactive visuals from her computer that you will be able to view on your computer. The class is designed to improve your oral communication in Spanish through conversation and participation.

2- Am I prepared to be successful in an online class?

3- How will practicing speaking Spanish online benefit me?

The CPI Online Program provides an interactive platform to help increase your confidence in expressing yourself orally, improve pronunciation, and learn the vocabulary for more specialized topics of conversation.

4- Will the CPI Online Program classes transfer as credit bearing?

No, the on-line classes are structured to improve your conversational skills. However the CPI Academic department maintains a record of each student’s progress and level of completion.

5- Will the on-line classes prepare me for my on-site immersion class when I arrive at CPI?

6- What is the least amount of Spanish I need to know in order to take the on-line classes?

No prior knowledge of speaking Spanish is necessary in order to register for the online program. We only ask that you are motivated to practice speaking the Spanish language.

7- What happens after I have completed a CPI Online Program learning block?

You may be interested in continuing to practice by registering for the next learning block. For example, if you complete the Beginner Level Learning Block A2 we welcome you to register for the next block in the Beginner Level sequence, Block A3.

8- If I complete a learning block but take a few months off, how will I remember where to start again?

Your student account remains active with us permitting you to log on to your account, visit your profile page and locate the schedule at the bottom of the page. Your file tracks your progress automatically and shows which learning block is available for you to register.

9- Do I reach a new level of Spanish, for example from beginner to intermediate, by completing the on-line classes?

Yes, the goal of the online program is to provide the opportunity to practice and improve your conversational skills; improved linguistic ability is acquired as each learning block is completed. Once you have successfully completed the entire series of blocks within a online program level you advance to the next level.

10- Are private classes available within the CPI Online Program ?

Yes and No. Please contact CPI directly to inquire as to availability.

11- How do I register for additional courses within the CPI Online Program ?

Your profile page will have a chart that automatically tracks your progress and shows the next learning block for which you qualify.

12- What if I want to begin a learning block but it has already started?

Once you have completed the placement exam for the online program and have been assigned to the appropriate level and learning block, you will be given the option to join the learning block that is already in progress (up to the halfway point) or you can wait until your assigned learning block starts again.

13- How many students will be in my on-line class?

We have set a maximum of 6 students per class in order to guarantee the highest quality level for the course and maximize the educational balance between student and instructor.

14- How many days per week will I attend the on-line class?

Most classes meet online 2 times per week day through Adobe Connect, a video conferencing software. There are additional options for individuals wanting private classes or the possibility of scheduling an extended session on a Saturday

15- What time do online classes start?

PRIVATE CLASSES: You choose the day(s) of your class Monday through Friday and time of the videoconference between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm Costa Rica time (for how this correlates to your specific time zone please reference the Registration link).

16- How long is each on-line class?

Each live online class will last approximately 2 hours (120 minutes). However, classes that involve quizzes, presentations or evaluations will take longer. Your instructor will inform you ahead of time the dates of classes that may be longer.

17- How much homework can I expect to complete after each on-line class?

Depending on the level of Spanish you are practicing, the amount of work you will complete outside of class varies. Please check your syllabus for more information.

18- Am I expected to participate?

Yes, the main goal of this new program is that you can actively participate through communication. We understand that students with little or no prior Spanish knowledge may find this a bit challenging. However, our instructors are trained and experienced in working with all Spanish levels and will make every effort to make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed during the class to ensure active participation.

19- Will there will be feedback at the end of each learning block?

Yes, depending on your level of Spanish there are different tools utilized to measure progress. None of the materials within the block are traditionally graded and you will have an opportunity to complete any of the exercises more than once, if needed. Keeping the class size to a six person maximum permits individualized attention and helps to ensure that each student feels adequately prepared to complete the on-line homework and exercises.

20- Do I need any additional software to attend the on-line class?

No, you will be attending class using Adobe Connect and Moodle, both of which are provided to you free of charge. There is no need to download the software but you will need a broadband internet connection to use the software effectively. Additional technology requirements can be found here.

21- Why does my audio and video break up during class?

The main reason is because the Internet connection cannot handle all the data being sent or received. The bandwidth is not able to transmit audio and video in real time. Please visit our technology requirements here for more information.

22- Do I need to be able to speak to the professor during the class?

Yes, because the goal of the program is to practice your conversation skills, it is required that you be able to speak with the professor and other students during the class.

23- Do I have the ability to share the video during the online class?

Yes, Adobe Connect can share live video from the professor and the student in the case that parents, or other family members, would like to observe what the student’s class is like. Additionally, anyone interested in a “free trial” will be able to also observe the online class using the shared video to get a feel for what it will be like if they sign up.

24- Are there times when online classes will not be held, such as holidays?

Yes, please check the CPI calendar here to review our schedule and holidays. The online program follows the same calendar.
